The Alienist (2018)


Based on a book by Caleb Carr with the same name. Psychological thriller set amidst the vast wealth, extreme poverty and technological innovation of 1896 New York.


There have been serial murders of boy prostitutes in NY, commissioner Theodore Roosevelt calls upon criminal psychologist Dr. Laszlo Kreizler, newspaper illustrator John Moore and police department secretary Sara Howard to conduct the investigation in secret. All together they begin a hunt for a murderer, using their own special methods.



Alias Frace (2018)


Based on the 1996 Margaret Atwood novel of the same name.


Story of young Grace Marks, a poor Irish immigrant and domestic servant in Upper Canada who is accused and convicted of the 1843 murder of her employer and his housekeeper.


Stablehand James McDermott is also convicted of the crime. McDermott is hanged, but Grace is sentenced to life in prison, leading her to become one of the most notorious women of the period in Canada.


The story is based on actual 19th-century events.



Peaky Blinders (2013)


British period crime drama television series created by Steven Knight.


Tommy Shelby, the leader of the Peaky Blinders gang based in Birmingham. The series follows the exploits of the Shelby crime family in the direct aftermath of the First World War.


Series focus primarily on the Shelby family, who are fully fictional characters, but some of the characters actually excised in real life. Peaky Blinders basically represent the life of Birmingham society of the 1920s.







Freud (2020)


Austrian-German crime television series re-imagining the life of a young Sigmund Freud (fictional of course - so technically, its historical fiction). While most of the facts about Freud are made up, the series focus more on how would he behave in given curcumstances.


With several disappearances and murders in Vienna, young Sigmund Freud is solving various mysteries in 1886 Vienna, assisted by medium Fleur Salomé and policeman Alfred Kiss.







The Lizzie Borden Chronicles (2015)


Based on a true story about Lizzie Borden, an American woman tried and acquitted of the August 4, 1892 axe murders of her father and stepmother in Fall River, Massachusetts.


In 1893, four months after Lizzie Borden's acquittal for the murders of her father and stepmother, she and her sister Emma try to start a new life despite financial troubles and Lizzie's ruined reputation. Meanwhile, Pinkerton detective Charlie Siringo arrives in Fall River to investigate the case for himself.
